ATHERTON CC put their league commitments to one side as they took on Wavertree from the Liverpool Competition in the first round of the National KO.
Wavertree scored steadily and after 10 overs reached 25 for 1, Nuttall taking the only wicket.
A double bowling change saw West and Walsh being introduced into the attack, Wavertree continued to score at a good rate but at the same time wickets started to fall and by the 24th over they had been reduced to 84 for 5.
From this point a big score looked unlikely and they were finally bowled out for 130 in the 44th over. Wickets were shared, Walsh (3-25), Baines(2-18), Nuttall(1-18), West (1-16) and Karl Brown(1-16).
After last weeks good batting display, Atherton should have been quite confident of knocking off these runs. Atherton lost both openers within the first two overs and by the eighth over they were 18 for 4. Bannister and Walsh took the score to 42 before Walsh went. 42 for 5 soon became 50 for six as Williamson was run out for 2. Wavertree then claimed the big wicket of Bannister for 22 and any hopes of an Atherton victory seemed to have gone with him.
Fifteen-year-old Jack Fahey joined Paul Brown at the wicket. The pair put together a partnership of 30 taking the score to 100 and with plenty of overs left an unlikely victory looked on the cards. Unfortunately Fahey was bowled for 11 and last man Baines after showing some resistance was out for six, leaving Brown unbeaten on 31 and Atherton 20 runs short.
