AS Rolls-Royce gears up to celebrate a century of making prestigious motor vehicles one celebrity owner has hailed the company's success.

Preston actor Kenny Baker, best known for playing lovable android R2D2 in the Star Wars films is the proud owner of a royal blue 1982 Rolls-Royce Corniche and he insists he will never part with it.

The 3ft 8ins tall actor, from Ashton, has owned the elite motor for two years.

"They epitomise what a car should be," said Kenny, 69.

"It is such a beautiful car and wonderful to drive, and they last for ever.

"It's my pride and joy. I love driving it especially on special occasions like going to a black tie dinner."

Kenny admitted, however, that it was a bit too big to do the shopping in.

"I use my Mercedes sports car for that," he added.

Tuesday, May 4, marks the centenary of the first meeting of Henry Royce and the Hon Charles Rolls, a partnership which would come to symbolise one of the most prestigious names in the motoring industry.

Dr Mike Howse, director of engineering and technology at Rolls-Royce said: "The anniversary invites us to look back at our heritage and accomplishments and I am sure Rolls-Royce will be around for the next 100 years."
