CRIME fighters in Pendle have a new addition to the ranks today after taking delivery of a new vehicle given by a car dealership.

Colne-based Simpsons Skoda has given a Skoda Octavia Silverline to Lancashire Police to help them in their quest to put the brakes on crime.

The vehicle will come into operation immediately and will be used by Pennine Division's Community Safety Team to visit people and premises across Pendle, Burnley and Rossendale to issue advice on crime prevention and support.

It is the second year running the showroom, in Burnley Road, has given police a new car.

The move comes days after residents lost their battle to get the garage to build a fence to screen them from the building.

Owner Neil Simpson said trees would be planted to provide privacy.

Commander of Pennine Division, Chief Superintendent Jerry Graham said the vehicle which would have the force's logo painted on it, would play an important role in fighting crime.

He said: "I am delighted Simpson's Skoda have chosen to support the work of our Crime Prevention Team by providing us with another new car.

"The vehicle will be a valuable asset to our fleet of vehicles, enabling our officers to visit residents and companies across the division and give them crime prevention advice."

The keys to the car were handed over to the force last night at a special ceremony held at the showroom attended by director of Skoda Auto Chris Craft.

He said: "Everybody can play a part in helping to reduce crime and handing the new car over is our way of helping our local police. We are delighted to be supporting their good work and hope this car will contribute towards preventing people becoming the victims of crime".
