USERS of the Lancaster to Morecambe cycle track may have noticed that Asda has put a lot of effort into clearing up the cycle track near to the supermarket.
I understand the store has also made efforts to remove shopping trolleys from the River Lune and is also going to change the location of its recycling centre so that it creates less of a litter problem.
This has been agreed through a meeting between Asda representatives and city council officers, with the intention of encouraging businesses along the cycle track to be more responsible for their rubbish and to work on future joint anti-litter initiatives.
The council is hoping to have meetings with Morrison's and Sainsbury's - who also border the cycle track - and later this year will be formally launching a 'litter charter' for local businesses to sign up to as part of its litter reduction strategy.
This charter will commit the business to keeping the area outside their shop clean, among other things.
Cllr Jon Barry, Lancaster.
