I READ about Cllr Whitelegg's Pensioner's Pledge with great interest (Citizen, May 15), as I am sure we all did.
At first glance it sounds like a great idea - pegging the rise of pensioner's council tax to the rise in the state pension. This will make sure that pensioners never again face the same difficulties that many have this year.
You will also have read that the City Council voted against this idea when it came before us. It is a pity no one asked Liberal Democrats why.
Cllr Whitelegg was not at the meeting to hear our arguments when we called for the council tax to be scrapped but he certainly did hear Liberal Democrat councillors say that his motion did not go far enough.
Quite simply, Cllr Whitelegg's idea tinkers around with a system that does not work and the Liberal Democrats believe should go. That is why we are campaigning to 'Axe the Tax' - get rid of the unfair council tax and replace it with a local income tax.
This will make sure that all sectors of our community pay according to their means and not the value of their property. For most this will mean a reduction in bills.
Cllr Stuart Langhorn, University Ward.
