NEWLY promoted Heysham got a taste of just how tough life in Division One of the South Lakeland Cricket League is going to be in the season's opener at Arnside on Saturday.
The Division Two champions had to field first and may have thought they had done well to restrict the villagers to 158 for 7.
But they were never in with a shout of reaching the target and made just 116 for 6 at stumps to pick up two points.
It was much worse for Bare as they travelled to reigning champions Milnthorpe and were bowled out for only 35 - with Bob Baldwin taking six wickets for the hosts in his first match after switching from Arnside.
A season of struggle looks in prospect for Bare after Milnthorpe cruised to maximum points without losing a wicket.
Westgate suffered a surprise heavy reverse at home against Windermere, where the visitors batted first and posted a score of 174 for 6 (A Proctor 55) before running through the Westgate card at a cost of only 48 runs.
Shireshead featured in an even more surprising result - the first tied game of the season. The locals' game against Burneside finished with both teams on 104 for 9.
Warton had little trouble bagging their first win as Neil Jones hit 81 and Ryan Nelson 55 in a score of 211 for 4 at Sedgwick - with the hosts then bowled out for 146.
The first century of the season came in Division Four, where Moor Hospital's G Beacham hit a match-winning 111 in his team's 228 for 7 declared against Bentham. Remarkably, the ton came up in just 24 scoring shots - including 15 towering sixes.
