I AM writing to express my pleasure at the new sculpture and water feature in Prestwich Precinct, and also the way in which it was inaugurated.

It represents a very successful collaboration of different sections of the community and I very much enjoyed the contributions of all the young people who took the trouble to share their creativity with us. I found the dance dignified and calming; it created sequences or architectural shapes which were well integrated with the design of the "Retreat" water feature.

During the past 15 years, local people have objected to at least two proposals to build on the former grassed area, arguing that we needed a sunny spot to sit and meet our fellow citizens. This new focal point proves that it is well worth fighting for a good environment. I feel proud to have such beautiful artwork in my town centre.

Perhaps we will all have different responses when we sit by the fountains, I would like to share mine and perhaps other readers will write in with theirs.

Last year, my 11-year-old decided to search for the source of Prestwich Clough stream (the Deyne Brook). With the help of books from our library, local experts, Bury MBC officers and much "leg work", he discovered that it begins somewhere under the precinct, before meandering underground around three sides of the village. What were once the life waters of Prestwich have been hidden for many years, but now water once again enlivens the heart of this community.

Finally, the great swoop and turn of the granite wall will remind me of the leaps of local artist/dancer Lea Parkinson, who did so much for young people and who died a couple of years ago. It all seems to symbolise using the life force to aim high for Prestwich.
