BLACKPOOL Council has a new look after the unveiling of a new logo.

The new design, showing Blackpool Tower made up of people, will gradually replace the existing logo on stationery, leaflets and signs around the town.

It will be accompanied by a new slogan - 'Blackpool Council, building a better community for all.'

"We kept the iconic tower as part of the image and came up with the idea of having the structure made up of people to represent the fact that the council is here to serve the people of Blackpool," said council chief executive, Steve Weaver.

"The old logo had been in operation for some 10 years and times have changed.

"Blackpool is moving forward and the council felt it had a responsibility to reflect that in its logo which is seen everywhere from road signs to libraries and schools to street sweeping vehicles."

Design for the logo cost £1,500 and was carried out by Preston firm, Heckfords, after several local firms were asked to pitch their ideas.

With one eye on cost, the council will not bring in the new logo immediately.

Instead, it will be introduced gradually as vehicles are repainted, signs are renewed and leaflets reprinted.

"It's obviously not an overnight change because unlike the private sector who can allocate large sums of money to this sort of branding exercise the council knows it has a responsibility to council tax payers to ensure that costs are kept to a minimum," said a spokesman.

The logo is being introduced to capitalise on the increased level of interest in the council locally and further afield as a result of the ambitious resort Masterplan.

The council will also retain its traditional crest for use on important civic occasions.
