I HAVE noticed that a new speed camera is being introduced in Rishton.

The Tarmac around the base is still fresh and new, but the road markings have not yet been placed.

I raise the question as to why this device is being installed. I have no recollection of any serious problems at this point in the past few years.

This new camera is situated on the other side and lower down from that at Parker Street.

The actual position of this camera also raises the questions, as it is at a very narrow part of the road, with a traffic island in the middle, and traffic has no option but to slow down to negotiate this along with the parked vehicles which are legally allowed to park.

This would appear to be yet another example of a camera being installed where it is not required and does not warrant such an installation.

Or is it? Perhaps someone can justify its new existence.

FOOTNOTE: A spokesman for the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety said the decision had been made to erect the camera because there had been 21 crashes and two people killed or seriously injured nearby in the past three years.

He stressed that cameras were only installed in areas which fulfilled the strict government criteria for siting them.
