REGARDING all of the furore relating to the government's plans to instigate 'all' postal voting in time for the forthcoming June elections, I believe that provision should be made available to those who cannot get to the ballot box.
However, we have for a number of years been able to exercise our democratic right to vote by any reasonable and lawful method made available to us. Usually in person, by proxy, or if we so choose, by postal vote.
There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that purely postal voting alone, increases voter participation. There is absolutely no law in this nation of ours which compels us to vote.
There is however, significant evidence which shows that where there is an alternative to the 'main three' parties, namely that of a Nationalist nature, then there is an increased turnover in voter participation.
For evidence of this just look at the track record. My own election turnout back in November 2002 was the highest voter participation for some considerable time! The same can be said of the majority of elections where an "alternative" party has fielded candidates.
So it is fair to say that commonly speaking from from being to the advantage of the Labour Party, a higher voter participation will be to the advantage of the 'Nationalist' parties. Why then is it that Labour are so desperate to enforce their policy of postal only voting?
Unfortunately the answer is somewhat sinister. If the records show a higher voter participation through postal only voting it will be because the Labour Party have manipulated a system to which they have had over four decades to twist and shape to their advantage.
