A SOCCER lout involved in trouble after a "high profile" Burnley v Derby County match - has been given a football banning order.

Burnley Magistrates heard how father-of-two David Grimshaw, a Leeds fan but said by police to be an "Accrington Stanley hooligan", was seen by officers chasing a man in Burnley town centre 15 minutes after the final whistle at Turf Moor last Saturday.

Grimshaw, who was hurling threats and abusive insults at the man, smelled of drink, was unsteady on his feet and was incoherent.

The defendant, who has previous football related convictions, is now banned from soccer games for three years, but the bench did not exclude him from Burnley town centre on match days.

The 34-year-old defendant, of Oswald Street, Accrington, admitted being drunk and disorderly. He was fined £50, with £50 costs. Andy Robinson, prosecuting, told the court police were on duty on Yorkshire Street about 15 minutes after the match had ended and an officer noticed a man running down the street chasing another male. The officer caught the defendant, asked him what he was doing and Grimshaw replied incoherently: "He tried to hit me."

Grimshaw, who had already been made subject of a sporting events exclusion order, had public order convictions related to soccer.

Dylan Bradshaw, defending, said Grimshaw did not shy away from his previous convictions. He was in Burnley coincidentally on Saturday, had not been to the match and was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

He started to chase the man but acknowledged he had reacted in an unlawful way. Mr Bradshaw told the court the defendant was a Leeds supporter, had no interest in Burnley or Derby County and it was coincidence the teams were playing.
