I WOULD like to offer some further comments regarding letters recently published about driving a MPV (Motor Propelled Vehicle) off-road.
While I have to agree and sympathise with Mr M Wignall (LET, March 18) I think the legitimate use of driving on Unclassified Roads (UCRs) and bridleways should be allowed to continue.
The points raised by Mr H Robinson (LET, March 24) are in my view somewhat misleading and off-track. He states that vehicles ie, 4x4s and motorcycles should not be allowed on footpaths and bridleways. Well he is quite right they should not be. But many of these rights of way are often not clearly signposted which adds to so much confusion.
A vehicle which is road legal ie, carries a road fund licence, MOT and is insured is covered for use on public highway, UCR or Byway open to all traffic.
These types of public roads (UCR Byways) have largely escaped Tarmac. The maintenance and responsibility of these routes is that of the local authority and is often low priority and usually ignored.
The TRF (The Trail Riders Fellowship) do not ride on bridleways or footpaths.
