A RELIGIOUS group in Bury has built its own place of worship, in just seven days.
The massive project was jointly undertaken by Bury and Whitefield congregations of Jehovah's Witnesses to build a new Kingdom Hall from scratch with skilled volunteers.
The main construction took place between April 14 and 18, and 85 per cent of the building was finished. The carpet laying, furnishing, and landscaping were finished the following weekend.
More than 250 volunteers from as far away as Scotland went along to the Tenterden Street site in Bury to help build the centre. This is the 100th hall of its type to be built in the UK in the last 20 years.
Volunteers were fed and watered by the women from each local congregation. They provided 1,300 hot meals, 1,500 bacon and egg muffins and more than 4,000 pieces of cake, along with countless cups of tea and coffee.
The new kingdom hall will seat 160 people and will be shared by the Bury and Whitefield groups, even though they have their own separate meetings. The centre, it is hoped, will be fully functional by the end of May.
