BACUP Borough failed in their bid to remain unbeaten against Warrington Town in their final game of the season.

This was the fourth meeting between these two sides in a month, after Bacup had knocked them out of League Challenge Cup semi-final over two legs.

But you could sense from the home side's performance that, with the cup on display and the curtain coming down on the season at West View, they were in a laid back mood and were thinking ahead to the after-match party.

In stark contrast, promotion chasing Warrington were hungry for the three points.

The game was heading for a goalless draw until the 70th minute.

A wicked bounce surprised captain Steve Stott and defender Paul Davies who, for the first time in the game, allowed visiting striker Hevrin to get away from him.

The Warrington front man created half a yard to turn and strike, with the ball nestling in the bottom corner.

The hard ground and long season had taken its toll on Bacup, with the home side having to replace Lee Anderson, Billy McCartney and Stuart Telfer just after half-time all through injury.

Manager Brent Peters said: "Under normal circumstances I would have rail-roaded my players for the laid back, stand off, non-competitive performance.

"But this was a case of a game too far in a season in which they have done me proud yet again.

"To finish where we have in the table and lift the Challenge Cup as well in our first season in the First Division is no mean feat.

"It is frightening to think what we would have achieved had I have had the current personnel at the club at the start of the season."

He added: "I would like to thank the hard work my entire staff at the club have put in and the coverage throughout the season of the radio and press."
