LANCASHIRE residents could buck national trends and become among the fittest in the country, county council transport bosses said today.
They believe that people in the county already have everything they need to take up the Government's advice of exercising for at least 30 minutes every day.
The county council already works closely with businesses in Lancashire to promote cycling, walking and public transport as ideal way for many to commute.
It is now hoped that new research from England's chief medical officer will give people the boost they need to become more active.
Lancashire County Council's TravelWise campaign manager Richard Owens said: "Lancashire has hundreds of miles of cycle paths, footpaths and some excellent public transport services.
"The Government highlights things like taking the bus or train instead of driving or switching over to pedal power as an easy way to meet your daily exercise quota. There is clear scientific evidence that doing a small amount of exercise -- such as walking to and from the bus stop -- can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
"Lancashire County Council has been doing everything it can to make public transport more attractive and this research is just one more reason to give it a try."
