POLICE in Blackburn were today trying to piece together events leading up to a machete attack in the Redlam area of the town.

A 33-year-old Blackburn man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after reports of a fight involving a machete at 12.15am on Saturday.

But because of an injury to his wrist, police officers have not been able to question him.

The man, who has not yet be named, was taken to hospital with a serious wrist wound and has undergone surgery.

Detectives from Blackburn CID hope to speak to anyone who saw the fight, near the Griffin Inn, or who witnessed a fight earlier in the evening outside the Eastern Spice takeaway.

A 23-year-old man suffered facial injuries in the attack and a 17-year-old boy suffered serious leg injuries after being slashed above his ankle.

He is being treated at the Royal Preston Infirmary. An 18-year-old girl suffered an eye injury when she was hit with a bottle.

Police were called after reports of a fight. There had been earlier reports that the same group of people had been fighting.

DS Mick Cross, who is the leading the investigation, said inquiries were continuing into the attack.

He said: "The 23-year-old was released from hospital after receiving treatment but the 17-year-old has a serious injury to the lower part of his leg and was taken to Royal Preston Infirmary.

"The man we arrested is also in hospital being treated for a wrist wound so we haven't had the chance to speak to him. As soon as he is released we will interview him and, at that point, we may be able to release more details of what happened."
