MOTORISTS will be forced to kill their speed if plans to turn an area of Nelson into a 20mph zone are approved.
Pendle Council's Nelson Committee has £15,000 to spend on traffic-calming schemes in the town.
In a report to the committee officers have recommended that proposals to turn the Smith Street/Hendon Road area, which has a history of accidents, into a 20mph zone are made a priority.
Pendle Council would contribute £12,000 to the scheme and Lancashire County Council would put in £25,000.
Officers have suggested that the remaining £3,000 be spent on improving the surface of a public footpath from Hibson Road to the Hard Platts, which is used by pupils at Edge End High School and often gets muddy.
In the last financial year the committee allocated £20,000 to introduce a 20mph zone in the Fleet Street area of Nelson.
But the work has not yet been carried out.
The committee is being asked to agree to carry the funding over into the current financial year so that the scheme, which is being assessed by the county council, can go ahead.
The Nelson Committee will discuss these proposals for traffic-calming schemes when it meets at the Town Hall, on Monday, May 10.
