THERE is £5000 up for grabs in this year's "Pub Idol" competition at The Royal Venue, Cleveleys.

Staged over 16 weekly heats from Wednesday May 26, the singing competition which last year attracted more than 180 entrants, is open to amateur and semi-professional singers over 18.

Each heat winner goes forward to one of two semi finals, with the top four from each semi going forward to the grand final on September 29.

Top prize for the winner is £1000 plus the opportunity to record their own CD at a Blackpool studio. There are also cash prizes for runners up at all levels of the competition.

A panel of judges will award points for song quality and choice, stage dress and presence and overall entertainment value. All entrants must provide their own backing tracks on CD or mini-disc or can be self-accompanied.

The Royal Venue's business development manager, Peter Wills, said of last year's inaugural event: "We were surprised and delighted at the response to the competition and in the overall quality of the performances.

"There is a lot of talent out there and this type of competition gives performers the opportunity to improve their skills and present themselves before an appreciative live audience.

"There'll be no public humiliation by the likes of Simon Cowell or Pete Waterman in the TV programme with a similar name. We just want every competitor to enjoy themselves.

"Last years' event produced a number of artistes who have since gone on to greater things, with at least one singer turning professional as a result of being spotted by an entertainment booking agent.

"We are looking forward to this years 'Pub Idol' with great anticipation and feel confident that at least one more 'star' will emerge."
