MORE than 17,500 bottles of champagne are expected to be quaffed by racegoers at the three-day Chester May meeting which started on Wednesday.
Chester is the oldest course in the country, with racing dating back to the early 16th century.
Racing takes place on the Roodee, once the site of a huge Roman harbour.
The course, which has picturesque views of the Welsh hills and the River Dee, is unusual because it is a tight oval with a very short run-in.
Chester is one of the most popular racecourse in the UK and attracts huge crowds to all of its meetings, with the three days in May its most high-profile racing meeting.
