THE suspected driver of a car, which crashed in Radcliffe leaving two teenage passengers fighting for their lives, has handed himself in to police.

The 18-year-old reported to Bury police station on Saturday and was arrested on suspicion of failing to stay at the scene of a road accident.

The previous evening, a blue Peugeot 405 saloon crashed in Bury Road. As the car turned a left hand bend, it collided with a wall and a lamp post on the opposite side of the road. The car returned to the left side of the road, rolled onto its roof and collided with a tree.

An 18-year-old male youth was thrown through the windscreen and suffered severe bruising and a serious head injury. Another 18-year-old, who also suffered serious head injuries, had to be cut free from the car by firemen.

Both casualties were taken to Fairfield General Hospital and later transferred to Hope Hospital, where their conditions were described as serious.

Witnesses told police that a third person was in the car when it crashed, but fled the accident scene.

A spokesman for Bury traffic unit said: "An 18-year-old local man subsequently presented himself at Bury police station, where he was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of an injury road traffic accident.

"He has been bailed and is due to re-appear at the weekend, when he will be interviewed. At this stage, it is unclear if he is the driver of the Peugeot."
