A FOREST where people can dedicate trees to loved ones, or major family events, has been officially launched.
The new Forest of Life has been created near Stocks Reservoir, in Slaidburn, and will include 1,000 trees. Each tree costs £395 to dedicate, with money going to the Royal British Legion, or the Soldiers, Sailors and Air Force Families Association.
The Mayor of Ribble Valley, Coun Alan Yearing, officially opened the forest yesterday.
It has been created by the Life for a Life Memorial Forests and Gardens Charity, which has raised £1.5million for the causes it supports.
Much of the land used for the forest is owned by United Utilities, and Bruce Bendell, of the company, said: "We are delighted to offer this piece of land as a new Life for a Life Forest.
"Within 20 years, there will be a maturing woodland which will provide a living memorial to family and friends, while raising much-needed funds for local charities."
Each tree has a plaque at its base, as well as a certificate of ownership. The scheme guarantees the trees will be looked after for at least 20 years.
