GOLBORNE Parkside U12s produced their best display of the season to win the NW Counties Cup final, beating Saddleworth 22-8.
Within two minutes of the kick off Golborne were 4-0 down but their answer came in the form of forward Kieran Bolger who burst through the defence and ran over half the length of the field to score under the posts.
Golborne settled and constantly pressurised the Saddleworth defence, almost scoring on a few occasions through Johnaton Peters, William Waterworth and Nathan Home.
The pressure continued until a decisive breakthrough a minute from the end of the first half when Golborne's scrum half, Zack Kirkham passed a perfect ball to Anthony Watkinson who set up Kieran Bolger to pass to Jack Hughes to score in the corner.
The second half began with Saddleworth pressurising Golborne's defence for a prolonged period of time, but they stood firm with awesome tackling form Jake Roylance, Zack Kirkham, Anthony Watkinson, Sean Pennington and William Waterworth.
Midway through the second half, half back David Crossley, who played his best game of the season, passed to Zack Kirkham who in turn passed to Anthony Watkinson, and then to Jack Hughes who ran half the length of the field with phenomenal pace to score his second try.
Saddleworth pressed again but some great forward running by David Crossley, James Wood, Jake Roylance and Marc Whittakker brought Golborne to within 10 metres of the Saddleworth try line. Quick thinking from Kieran Bolger put the ball in Johnaton Peters hands for him to power through for Golborne's fourth try with the conversion from Jack Hughes.
Saddleworth had their best period in the game and were rewarded with a well deserved try.
Golborne replied with renewed enthusiasm until the final minute when Saddleworth dropped the ball from a great tackle by Jack Hughes. The ball fell to Alex Gerrard who ran 30 metres to score a great try.
Man of the match was awarded to captain Jack Hughes.
