BRITISH Telecom will today reveal which phone boxes it intends to remove in East Lancashire.

About 80 phone boxes are expected to go after a review, first reported by the Lancashire Evening Telegraph last year.

The company cited the fact that because demand for public payphones had fallen by 50per cent in the last three years, there were too many call boxes.

A spokesman for BT said: "We recognise the value of payphones in emergency situations but can't provide them solely for this purpose. Having looked carefully at the situation in East Lancashire, we believe reductions can be achieved with the minimum of inconvenience."
