THE early May Bank Holiday weekend provided plenty of racing for the junior members of the Bury-Pedalsport.

A group of youngsters travelled to Stoke on Saturday for the second round of the British youth and junior league and although no individual scores were available as we went to press, their combined efforts placed the Bury club in third place out of the nine taking part.

Sandwell, 103, Astley & Tyldesley 69, Bury 60, Wednesfield 57, Leicester 54, Sheffield 51, Tameside 28, Hull 27, Stoke 25.

After two rounds Bury are in a very creditable second place overall, Sandwell 237, Bury 149, Astley & Tyldesley 124, Sheffield 104, Leicester 90, Hull 59, Wednesfield 57, Tameside 52, Stoke 25.

Bank Holiday Monday's Sandwell staging of the John Baugh Memorial Trophy meeting saw a very strong line up competing for the silverware, but Bury's sole representative Ben Scranage was completely out of luck finalising well down the field. Horspath's Mike Morgans took the trophy.

The main racing of the weekend was at Goshen on Sunday when Bury scored their second double of the season, winning both matches against Birmingham, to repeat their triumph in the Midlands in the first match of the season.

In the second team match Bury went ahead right from the start with 7-3 and never looked back. Five 7-3s and a 6-4 over the twelve heats secured a comfortable 69-47 scoreline.

Steve Mann 15, Will Collins 11+4, Chris Parrish 10+1, Tom Doyle 10+1, Michael Parrish 10+1, Ashley Simpson 8+2, David Parrish 5.

After a shaky start in the first division match with two 6-4 defeats, three 7-3 victories before the interval put the Bury side back on track, and although Birmingham contained them in the second half, the home side maintained their lead for a 96-84 victory.

Skipper Neil Howarth was again in fine form and his five rides included three wins and some skilfull passes for 18 pts, Ben Scranage 13+2, Mark Rushby 13, Steve Muff 13, John Whiting 11+3, Fred Rothwell 10+1, Tom Doyle 9+2, Scott Jarman 9+2.

Bury are away at Stoke, in tough Midland/North regional fixtures on Saturday, but there is a big day of racing at Goshen on Sunday when Bury stage the Northern Alliance cup finals.

Racing starts at 11am with a junior semi-final, and the senior competition will see no less than six teams racing over 30 heats to decide the cup winners, starting at 2pm.
