OUT of contract Morecambe skipper Stewart Drummond has done what many fans at Christie Park feared - and opted for a new challenge away from the team he has led with such distinction.
The 28-year-old midfielder (pictured) has joined newly promoted Chester City as they step up into the Football League.
Drummond had been with the Shrimps for a decade after coming up through the youth system but made no secret of his desire to play at a higher level.
He said this week: "I have done most things at Conference level, apart from taking Morecambe into the league, played in the play-offs and represented England. I have proved myself there and it's time for a new challenge."
Manager Jim Harvey, though disappointed at the news, has wished the player well at his new club.
He says: "Stewart declined our offer to stay and has taken the opportunity to get into the Football League... We may achieve it at Morecambe next season but this was a guaranteed opportunity for him and I have got no problem with that."
