CHILDREN at Elton Primary School had a special friend in mind when they took part in a sponsored silence.
The school was one of more than 1,100 across the country that fell silent in an event for Macmillan Nurses.
Care was provided by Macmillan Nurses for their classmate Dana Carroll, who died in March, aged eight, after a battle with a rare form of bone cancer.
Last week, the children's silence proved to be golden when they handed over a £1,538 cheque to Dana's former nurse Eileen Hupton.
Around 330 pupils took part in the ten-minute silence, held in January, and wore red clothes instead of their school uniforms.
School charity organiser, Chris Ashforth, said: "The children did tremendously well. This is the sort of charity we would always support, but it was obviously something quite close to our hearts."
