COLNE was a community in shock today as news of the death of youngster Lisa Regan spread through the town.
Three bunches of flowers and a line of police tape today marked the spot where the youngster fell to her death.
Hundreds had watched the emergency services operation to try to save Lisa and friend John Murphy who fell into the lodge at BSN Medical, in North Valley Road, on Saturday.
Shopkeeper Frank Timberlake, 63, of Timberlake's Off-Licence at the corner of North Valley Road and Langroyd Road, said: "It is terrible news.
"I have been here 26 years and it is very close-knit community round here.
"People are very shocked and upset at what has happened.
"Children have been climbing into the lodge for years.
"I remember a youngster who was pulled out about 20 years ago and was luckily OK, but what has happened to this little girl is so sad."
Vice-chair of North Valley Residents's Association, Evelyn Illingworth, said: "I'm very sorry to hear what has happened, it's a dreadful shock.
"People on the estate are very close and this is a tragedy."
Vivary Bridge ward councillor, David Clegg, who covers the area, said: "This is very sad for everyone involved but especially for the parents who must be devastated.
"Hopefully the investigation will help prevent accidents like this happening again.
"But if the children had somewhere to go and play in the area they wouldn't need to go to these places anyway.
"There is just nowhere for them to go."
