EAST Lancs gained revenge for last year's Worsley Cup final defeat when they knocked out Rawtenstall in the first round yesterday.

The holders seemed set to repeat last year's cup-winning exploits when they added 59 for the first wicket, with professional Andrew Payne being the backbone of the innings with a solid 85 from 146 balls.

It included nine fours and his 50 took 95 balls, but with sub pro Johan Botha, Sid Patel and Hugh Doyle claiming two wickets each, Payne was short of back-up and Rawtenstall closed their innings on 191-9.

In reply, Phil Mercer and Phil Bolton put on 111 for the first wicket before Mercer (51 from 90 balls with three sixes and three fours) was bowled in the 27th over.

Despite losing further wickets - Bolton for 84 (98 balls, six fours and three sixes), Turner run out, and then Botha and Clague, Mark Lomas steered the home team to victory by five wickets.

In the second round East Lancs will host Enfield, who scorched to 252-3 against Accrington, pro Alviro Petersen hitting 149 not out.

The South African then took 3-54 and David Bracewell 4-56 as Accrington, despite Tama Canning's 80, were all out for 208.

Church won a thrilling run chase to spring a surprise on Bacup, reaching their victory target with just one wicket to spare.

Nick Westwell took 4-32 as Bacup were skittled out for 129 but David Ormerod's remarkable burst of 5-5 in 10 overs left Church on 87-8.

Alec Holt and Phil Gilrane then put on 35 for the ninth wicket before Westwell joined Gilrane to see Church home.

Sub pro Franklyn took a hat-trick in Haslingden's six-wicket victory over Todmorden, his 4-23 helping to reduce the home side to 156 all out.

Rose also finished not out on 12 as Haslingden reached the target for the loss of four wickets in 29 overs, Lewis McIntosh making 76.

Rishton will resume on 63-2 tonight after rain prevented them from finishing their game with Nelson, who made 288-2 thanks to Joe Scuderi's 155 and Paul Garaghty's unbeaten 106.
