A 10-YEAR-OLD boy mauled by a dog in a Blackburn school playground has been left "extremely traumatised" by the ordeal.

Sohail Chogle, from Cherry Street, Audley, was bitten on the leg by a pitbull-type dog which ran amok in the playground of Audley County Junior School, where Sohail is a pupil.

Police officers will decide in the next few days whether to press charges against the owner of the dog, from Skye Crescent, Shadsworth. The owner has been visited by an officer.

Two dogs, which were being walked unleashed by two men, ran into the playground of the school at 12.30pm on Friday.

Children playing in the yard, including Sohail, started running away from the dogs which excited the animals.

One locked jaws on the youngster's leg. The owner then prised the dog off Sohail, a Year Six pupil.

He was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary, where he was given a course of antibiotics. He did not need stitches to the wound.

A family member today said: "Thankfully, it is not a bad wound but he has been left extremely traumatised by what happened.

"He is now recovering at home but is very upset."

He added: "This should act as a warning to people to keep their dogs on leads." Inspector Stuart Bruce said: "We will decide in the next few days whether to take things further.

"We are to decide whether we are dealing with the owner as the owner of a potentially dangerous dog or whether there is a reasonable explanation for what happened.

"The wishes of the injured party will also be considered before making a decision."

Headteacher at Audley Junior School Adrian Woods, who witnessed the attack, blasted the dog owners as "utterly irresponsible" for having the dogs off their leads but said they acted responsibly once the incident happened.
