GRAHAM Barrow's joy at watching his side snatch a 2-0 victory over Macclesfield was tempered by his knowledge that some of them wouldn't be pulling on the white shirt in August writes PETER COLLINS
"It's now time for the side of the job I hate, decisions have had to be made which I'm not comfortable with, but that's life and we have to look to the future and build.
"It's always difficult when you have to let professionals go but it can be devastating for a youngster.
"But we have the basis of a good squad and I'm confident I can bring in some good signings, but the next one or two to come in are going to be crucial."
Going nowhere, despite the rumours, is goalkeeper Glyn Garner.
"He certainly justified his Player of the Year status on Saturday," he said.
"Earlier in the season he made saves like those to keep the score down to two or three against, on Saturday they were match winning saves and hopefully that's what they'll be next season.
"Any successful team has to have the right man between the sticks, and I believe we have, he stood up to Macclesfield and kept them out."
Another player whose future with the club looks assured is Simon Whaley, who netted the club's second goal on Saturday to open his football league account.
"It's not yet clear whether he's a wide player or is better suited playing inside, where he's been playing recently and done well," said Barrow.
"He's had his fair share of hard knocks at the club so it's been pleasing to see him come through, he's an exciting player."
However, when it comes to recruiting new signings he admitted it was not going to be easy.
"This could be a tough area to be playing football in, because I know Rochdale, Macclesfield and Chester are all going to be having a go next season and they're all looking to recruit.
"There are good players out there like Matthew Tipton, but the likes of him may be out of reach because clubs like Macclesfield have the backing now to have a real go at promotion next season, which doesn't make it easy for us.
"Although I've been keeping an eye on the retained lists as they've been coming out and for example Tranmere are letting some interesting players go."
