A RoverAll View, with JASON WHALLEY. . .

WHEN it comes to clubs and their supporters masquerading as something they aren't Tottenham Hotspur take some beating.

They would have us believe they are a 'big' club even though they are rarely to be seen when the awards are handed out.

Their so-called tradition and past achievements are constantly rammed down our throats by the friendly media entourage they seem to have.

They talk fondly of the double winners, their proud cup tradition, Bill Nicholson, Danny Blanchflower and Gazza.

The problem is with Spurs and their fans is that talk is all they have as now they are viewed as also rans and this has been the case for as long as I can remember.

They act with the arrogance of Manchester United fans without the success to go with it.

Then there's the time they nearly signed Rivaldo and Morientes, a pretty much laughable attempt by their board to placate their fans after the disastrous signing of Postiga.

In fact, if you think back two years, they 'nearly' won the Worthington Cup!

To listen to their fans on the morning of the game they only had to turn up...how sweet was that Rovers victory?

So even though safety had long been assured the result at White Hart Lane on Saturday still rankled.

It's always good to turn Spurs over no matter what, but I suppose it would have rankled a hell of a lot more had we needed the points to stay up.

As it happens it was a typical end of season game with a typical end of season feel.

We may have lost the game but chances were created and Cole and Stead are really starting to create an understanding. In some ways it's a shame the season is ending, we surely wouldn't have had such a struggle if these two had played together for the full campaign.

Roll on next season when the real Blackburn Rovers show their true colours.

It's about this time of year that the speculation starts as to the players who will be leaving and those coming in to Ewood in the close season.

It's been something of a relief to read Souey's comments on the type of player he is looking to bring in this summer.

It would appear that rather than sign players on previous reputations such as Baggio and Yorke, he's looking at young home-grown players with that most vital ingredient - hunger.

One can't put a price on good old-fashioned desire and it's to be hoped that the manager can unearth a couple more gems like Stead in the summer.

We've had our fingers burnt before with the highly paid mercenaries, it's important that it's not allowed to happen again.

For what it's worth, the players I'd like down here are Shola Ameobi, Robert Huth and Andy Reid from Forest.

Of course whether they'd want to come or if we have the funds is another story.

You never know, come August John Williams may be saying we 'nearly' signed Beckham and Henry!
