EXCLUSIVE by Terry Morgan: A PET budgie was chopped up and its remains scattered around a house at a drunken party that went sickeningly wrong.

Revellers also smashed up the house in Walshaw Road, Bury, smearing excrement over the furniture and walls in all rooms. They have since left messages on the answering machine of homeowner, Mrs Lynn Dougherty, bragging about their vile antics.

Mrs Dougherty's 28-year-old daughter was looking after the house over the weekend when she hosted the party on Saturday night. She has since disappeared. Police are now trying to trace Mrs Dougherty's daughter and a handful of youths who killed the budgie and damaged property.

PC Mo Duffield, who is leading the investigation, said: "Mrs Dougherty was away with her grand-daughter, her own daughter's child, when this party was held.

"She returned home on Sunday to find her house trashed, excrement spread throughout the house and her pet budgie chopped up. There is a possibility part of the bird has been eaten."

He said: "Mrs Dougherty is obviously distressed at what I can only describe as a pure act of evil by a number of people with no respect for other people's property or animals.

"Personally, I am shocked by the savagery of those who attended this party. This is one of the worst incidents I have ever had to deal with.

"I just hope that we can find whoever did this and I would urge anyone who knows the offenders to contact the police immediately."

Mrs Dougherty was unavailable to comment on the incident. Anybody with any information is asked to contact PC Duffield on 0161 872 5050. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
