TOM Cornthwaite of Blackburn Harriers won the 24th Pinhaw Moor Multi-Terain Race at Earby as the 2004 Pendle and Burnley Grand Prix got underway.
The 19-year-old completed the five miles in 29:49 ahead of Clayton veterans Mark Brown and six times Grand Prix Champion Mark Aspinall.
Last year's series winner Andy Stubbs was fourth.
Skipton's Anne Buckley was the first woman in 35:15 with defending champion Candice Leah representing Clayton the best local in fifth.
Clayton trio Ted Orrell, Christine Leathley and Kitty Garnett set course records in the M65, F55 and F65 classes.
Cheerful Chorley
CHORLEY Harriers enjoyed a successful evening at the first of their popular Night Race Series.
Not only did they attract over 200 runners to the Astley Village venue, but club member Richard Burney won the four-miler in 20:10.
Meanwhile the club's women took the team award with Gwen Farnworth first over 40, Claire Goulden first over 35, and Diane Ridd.
Graham Collinge of Accrington RR was the winning over 45, Blackburn Harrier Evan Cook won a competitive over 50 division where the top three were covered by six seconds, and Rossendale Harrier Christine Navan was first over 55 woman.
Silver for Payne
ONE of Chorley Athletic Club's most consistent elite performers John Payne competed yet again at the highest level at last weekend's 20K Masters Race Walk at Sutton Coldfield.
On a wet and windy Saturday, John, a race walking international, took the silver medal in the over 70 class in a time of two hours 15 minutes and 53 seconds.
While the course was described as undulating, competitors found it more like very hilly, and given that John's time is exceptional.
Harriers are hot
ROSSENDALE Harriers' juniors gained three first places in the Bunny Run Relays at Keighley.
Competing in teams of three, each running 2.5 mile fell stages, the under 14 girls, under 14 boys and under 16 boys all came out on top.
Katie Ireland, Lauren Briggs and Emma Flanagan combined for the girls with U14s Sam Tosh, Phil Bolton and Joe Kelly and under 16s Paul Wadsworth, Aaron Kelly and Carl Andrew sharing the glory for the boys.
At the Winter Hill Fell Race Phil Bolton was the winning under 14 boy with Katie Ireland second for the under 14 girls.
Powell victory
ENGLAND International Pauline Powell won the Salford 5K at Heaton Park on Saturday.
Blackburn Harrier Pauline clocked 16:44 for a margin of nearly two minutes over her nearest rival.
Elsewhere, Chorley Harrier Gwen Farnworth was the winning over 40 at the Waterloo 15K Multi-Terrain event at Southport breaking the tape in 1:06:07.
