YOUNG Carl Lomax was counting himself lucky to be alive for a second time in the space of eight months after being rescued from the canal at Clayton-le-Moors by a teenage canoeist.
Non-swimmer Carl, eight, had slipped in and was seconds away from drowning when he was rescued by 15-year-old Paul Astbury, of Queen Street, Clayton-le-Moors. In September the previous year, Carl, of Moor Street, had been rushed into hospital with head injuries after falling from a shed roof.
