THE long-running saga over Bengal Street toilets has taken another twist. The Leigh town centre loos are closed again and might not re-open.
Back in use just a few weeks ago after being closed for roof repairs and renovations, the public loos are shut again because of serious vandalism.
The closure follows public criticism of a lack of conveniences in the town centre.
The threat of permanent closure has arisen following plans unveiled by the council in April for new vandal-proof 'superloos'.
Cllr Brian Jarvis said: " It disgusting how drug users have vandalised the toilets. Even when we try and provide facilities they get damaged. It's on the cards for vandal-proof toilets on two new sites."
A council spokesman said: "The Bengal Street toilets have been closed again because of extensive vandalism that has caused such damage. The facilities are now unusable.
"We are assessing the situation and a decision is yet to be made as to whether the toilets will re-open."
