IT was very much a mixed bag of results for Bolton Association Elton last weekend.
The Leigh Laners continued their impressive league form, notching up a victory over Daisy Hill, but crashed out of the Cross Cup at the first round stage to Atherton.
As the traditional early season weather came back to haunt local cricket, Elton managed to escape the rains and extend their lead at the top of the Bolton Association.
They started strongly as Daisy wickets fell at regular intervals. Centre of attention was man-of-the-moment Mark Goddard, once again returning impressive figures of 5-34, taking his season haul to 19.
He was supported by Peter Kay and Dexter Fitton who both weighed in with two wickets a piece as Daisy Hill crumbled to 102 all out.
Elton's reply was orchestrated by Damien Keegan who blasted an unbeaten 41 while Mark Goddard showed all round good form with a tidily constructed 35 not out to enable Elton to cruise over the line with seven wickets to spare.
The joy quickly turned to despair when Elton arrived at Atherton's Higham Park ground the following afternoon.
Captain Graham Bushell won the toss and elected to bat. The decision looked to be a shrewd one when Elton were flying high on 100-3 with 20 overs still to come.
However, things went rapidly downhill after paid man Fitton was removed for 56. A few scratchy middle order contributions were not enough as the Bury side stuttered to 163 all out.
Not an ideal score, but the game was still alive. Not for long.
Talented youngsters Karl Brown and Paul Keenan soon set about the Elton attack, despatching them to all parts of the ground.
As both openers reached their fifties, the game was gone along with Elton's Cross Cup dreams.
Only Fitton returned figures of note with 1-27 from his allotted 10 overs, as Atherton were victorious by seven wickets.
BY A quirk of the fixture lists Walshaw found themsleves playing Lostock in both the league and Cross Cup last weekend.
Both matches should have been played away but because Lostock's ground was unavailable they were switched to Sycamore Road.
On a damp Saturday, in the league, Walshaw batted first and scored 184 for 7 with contributions from Anthony Harris, Jon Fielding, Bret Collins and Gary Dyson.
Lostock never looked likely to pass this score, especially after losing 11 overs to the weather, but Walshaw struggled to take wickets and had to settle for a winning draw with only four opposition wickets taken.
In the Cross Cup on Sunday it was a very different story.
Lostock batted first and were always in trouble from the first over when Alex Roughley took the first of his wickets with his second ball of the match.
Lostock were all out for 63 thanks to some fine bowling from Collins and Rob Faulkner.
Collins took four wickets for five runs to remove the Lostock top order before Faulkner blasted away the last four wickets, all of them bowled and three without scoring.
Walshaw knocked that total off for the loss of only one wicket.
