MORE safety officers have been drafted on to the Metrolink tram system to boost security.

Two public safety officers have been riding the network since February, reducing anti-social behaviour and tackling fare dodgers.

Now the number of officers is to be increased to six following the successful trial.

The expansion of the team means that the Bury, Altrincham and Eccles lines can all be patrolled by dedicated teams of two officers for the last eight hours of Metrolink operation, seven days a week.

Authority chairman, Councillor Roger Jones, said: "We want to tackle those people who can make using our buses, trains and trams an uncomfortable experience, so I am pleased that the results of this trial have been so positive.

"Passengers have reacted well to the public safety officers and increasing the number of officers riding the trams can only provide a further reassurance".

Phil Smith, managing director of Serco Metrolink, said: "The public safety officers have been warmly received by regular commuters and Serco staff.

"This important scheme will benefit our customers and reinforces our commitment to preserving Metrolink's reputation as an extremely safe form of public transport.

"The safety officers have proved a valuable complement to the dedicated Metrolink police force and I look forward to welcoming a further four officers on board in the near future."
