PRESCRIPTION charges in East Lancashire were set to go up by more than double to 50 pence an item.
MPs were standing by for a "bitter pill" announcement from chancellor Sir Geoffrey Howe in his June 12 budget. Charges had remained unchanged at 20 pence for more than eight years since April 1 1971 but were costing the state more than £2 each to produce.
