BURY MP David Chaytor is calling for a summit meeting of local police and health chiefs to look at the problem of binge drinking.
He said that alcohol abuse costs the country £20 billion a year, and leads to anti-social behaviour and domestic violence, apart from harming people's health.
The MP has written to Mark Sanders, chief executive of Bury Council; Chief Superintendent Gary Shewan, divisional police commander; Evan Boucher, chief executive of the Bury Primary Care Trust; and Peter Elton, director of public health, inviting them to participate in a straight-talking session to get to grips with the problem.
Mr Chaytor said: "All decent law-abiding people are fed up with the yobbish and threatening behaviour coming from a small minority who cannot behave properly when they have a few drinks inside them. I think it is time to show zero tolerance for anti-social behaviour and violence.
"We can no longer allow our quality of life to be held to ransom by a handful of idiots."

"It may also be true that there are a few rogue landlords and off-licence proprietors who encourage this behaviour, and they too need to know that it will not be tolerated.
