DARWEN manager Steve Wilkes admits he is "devastated" his side has missed out on promotion for what he believes is a breakdown in communication.
The Anchor Ground side expected to be promoted to the North West Counties First Division after ending the season in fourth place - the final promotion slot - in Division Two.
But Darwen were deducted three points for fielding Dennis Hill against Leek CSOB when he was suspended.
However, Wilkes said the error occurred unknowingly.
"We did not receive a letter about Dennis being suspended, or else I wouldn't have played him," he said.
"What makes the matter worse is that we lost 6-0 at Leek that night.
"We just have to accept it but I'm gutted - devastated - especially for my players as they have worked so hard all season."
Neighbours Great Harwood moved up to fourth place as a result and will be promoted instead.
