AN EAST Lancashire hospital has introduced a new 'multislice' CT scanner service for conditions such as lung cancer and abdominal abnormalities.
BMI The Beardwood Hospital patients in Blackburn were the first in the area to use the East Lancashire-based CT scanning service featuring the latest 'multislice' technology.
CT, Computed Tomography, allows fast and accurate diagnosis of many conditions - both cancerous and non-cancerous.
And the new 'multislice' technology is particularly useful for examinations that require high scanning speed and high-resolution images. For example, it has the ability to image the whole chest cavity in one breath hold.
The new machine is mobile, housed on an articulated lorry, and will be on site at the Beardwood every Friday.
The mobile service includes a dedicated highly-trained team of fully-qualified radiographers who will work closely with Beardwood's own radiography team.
Elizabeth Barker, Beardwood Radiology Manager, said: "The new service means that the Beardwood Hospital will have the capacity to scan as many as 20 patients in a 12-hour day."
