LEIGH police station is undergoing a massive £2.2m facelift which should be completed by next March.
Currently a new roof is being fitted to the Chapel Street building with better drainage, new windows and doors included in the revamp.
Inside alterations should start in August with wiring, heating, plumbing, toilets and security systems due to be modernised following a nationwide survey of police stations.
A GMP source said: "Some police stations are being knocked down and built from scratch, but the one at Leigh is able to be renovated.
"We will be completing the renovations internally over 56 weeks. It's taking so long because it is then possible to maintain a fully-functional police station as well."
She said the improvements were aimed at better officer deployment, improved access and facilities.
