THREE schools have won a sporting £800,000 lottery jackpot.
Astley St Mary's RC High, Hesketh Fletcher High, Atherton, and Golborne High are among 19 Greater Manchester schools who will receive a quota of a £7.4million payout from lottery good cause money to improve and develop PE and sports facilities for wider use by the community.
St Mary's have been allotted £349,803 for a fenced, floodlit multi-use games area which will support the development of the focus sports of soccer, rugby, tennis and hockey and increase the range of recreational facilities available for its 1,750 pupils, 250 from other schools and 450 outside users.
At Hesketh Fletcher the £252,736 award will also be spent to create similar facilities for the 998 pupils, 1137 primary school pupils and 560 community members.
The £201,474 funding to Golborne High will be used to drain and resurface a shale pitch to again create a floodlit multi-sports area for use by its 850 pupils, 650 primary school pupils and 16,440 community users.
New Opportunities Fund Board member, Geoff Thompson, said: "National Lottery players can take pride in the fact that they are helping to bring about such a positive change, widening availability and access to high quality sporting facilities in schools and communities."
