I WOULD like to see a TV industry voted award, The Mary Whitehouse Award, introduced. It would go to the person found to have a sense of responsibility for what hits our screens.
It won't, judging by today's standards, be often awarded. For example within TV someone has the power or not to inflict upon us Mr Gordon Ramsey, the 'Z' list celebrity who can cook a bit and (the reason he is on our screens) has a mouth like a sewer.
I don't blame Mr Ramsey, he is what he is. Rather, I blame whoever it is who thinks Mr R sufficiently obnoxious to warrant screening. (I doubt he will be on long if a chef can be found with more 'f' words per minute).
As a role model Mr R either reflects a total loss of manners across the nation (which I doubt) or is a 'tool' to undermine every parent or teacher with reasonable sense and standards they wish to instill in the young. Giving Mr R celebrity status is tantamount to an "assault on decency."
I used to think Mary Whitehouse too censorious for our own good, but I was wrong and she right.
