RESIDENTS could be hit with a £200 bill if they go on holiday and leave their burglar alarm to annoy the neighbours.
Bury Council officers warn that they will take action against home owners and businesses whose alarms cause sleepless nights for nearby locals. They say the problem is always worse in summer when people go away.
John Hazzleton, senior environmental health officer, said the council had powers to go in and silence alarms.
"That entails costs of around £200 to get a court order and employ an alarm engineer, all costs we can and will claim back from the alarm owners."
People are encouraged to fit a 20-minute cut-out and reset device, and notify the council and the police of the names, addresses and telephone numbers of key-holders. This is a free service. For a form, ring the council's noise pollution section on 253 5566.
