HYNDBURN'S mayor has blasted vandals who destroyed young trees at Great Harwood's Memorial Park over the weekend.
Six lime trees were snapped on Friday night and a seventh on Saturday night, costing around £65 each to replace. Local residents chased the group but were unable to catch them.
Mayor of Hyndburn Coun Win Frankland saw the first wave of damage on Saturday morning, during a voluntary clean-up with Great Harwood Prospects Panel and the Community Action Group.
She said: "The people responsible for this are mindless morons."
And yesterday she saw the seventh tree damaged overnight, which measured 20ft beforehand.
Barbara Sharples, secretary of the Prospects Panel environmental group, said: "These rascals just mindlessly walked past the trees and snapped them. It's really sad.
"The trees weren't small. They were well-on saplings measuring six feet."
