UPON reading "Park gets £29,000 spruce up" (April 29) I was surprised to see the park referred to as "Bedford Park".
I wasn't aware of the park being known as that in the many years I have lived in Sanderson's Croft.
I consulted a plan of the area from 1928 on which the park is named as "Butts Recreation Ground". A 1937 plan shows the majority of the houses along Sanderson's Croft had been constructed and the park extended on to the other side of the brook to include a bowling green and tennis courts. It was still "Butts Recreation Ground".
It later became "Butts Park" but has never been called "Bedford Park". The bowls team from the park is known as Butts Park bowling team.
