Golf round-up, with NICK SMITH. . .

MYERSCOUGH College's plans to set up a unique golfing academy in East Lancashire have moved a step closer.

They will start using their Burnley centre at Towneley Hall as a base for golf studies students on a full-time basis in September.

The Preston college already runs a National Diploma in golf studies but they are giving East Lancashire students the chance to study the sport on their own doorstep.

East Lancashire centre manager Peter Craney said: "This will be an exciting opportunity to develop players and hopefully nurture golfing talent in the area.

"Bringing the students through to a professional golfing career from the other areas of the industry would be the ideal situation."

Myerscough use Towneley Golf Club facilities and plan to transform the nine-hole course into an academy for the students.

The have also met with officials from East Lancashire Golf Association to drum up support and sponsorship as they bid to extend the diploma course they already run from the main campus in Preston.

Burnley Council have appointed a resident professional at the club and will consider applications to improve the facility to the standard that Myerscough require, including installing a driving range.

ELGA assistant secretary Brian Goodwin said: "We're giving it our support because anything that helps junior golf in East Lancashire is important.

"We will be looking for it to have mutual benefits.

"There could be some wonderful facilities we can use and from Myerscough's point of view, they will be hoping the juniors move on to become college students."

The National Diploma in golf studies course lasts two years and is for students aged 16 and above.

It has three main areas of study which are sports science, leisure management and golf club management with modules including psychology in sport performance, nutrition and health and safety.

Career opportunities from the course include golf professional, golf club management, retailing, coaching and sales rep.

The ELGA junior trials will be held at Bacup Golf Club next Wednesday, June 2.
