ONE of the borough's greatest stars, George Formby, was born 100 years ago this week.
People either love him or hate him, but the world's greatest ukelele player and greatest all round entertainer in the first half of the 20th century has never been forgotten.
This week there's been a concert in his memory at the Pier, a George Formby Centenary Stakes race run at Haydock Park. And I've dug out my old 78s and wind up gramophone to give him a blast. (I even have a cylinder of his father made before the record era)
There's also a Leigh furniture shop selling a big, gaudy picture of him for £95 in Railway Road -- but I'm afraid I'm not that much of a fan.
