PUTTING bobbies on the beat in Morecambe has dramatically slashed crime this year, it is claimed.

The area's community beat manager says theft from stores on the Morecambe town centre 'patch' is down by 50 per cent compared to last year.

PC Neil Pigott says there were 43 thefts from shops between January and May - compared with 83 last year.

"This is a huge reduction which can be attributed to working with retail staff using the community radio system and having a visible uniformed presence on the street," says PC Pigott.

"Regular offenders are being targeted and monitored. The message is that Morecambe is not a soft option."
